What is a Roofing system

What does  roofing system consist of? that depends of the type of roof you present have on your building. The Basic types of roofs are flat roofs and pitched roofs. Pitched roofs come in various shapes from some you can walk on like a ranch style to some you need staging on like Gambrel or Mansard roofs.

Dependent on the type of home you have, the year it was built, the location of your home will often play a role in determining the style or type of roof you have on your home. The older homes built on the east coast are very close together and the roofs are very steep. These homes are mainly cross gable, mansard, and gambrel roof assembles. These roof types utilize the attic space and can allow you more storage space or living space when finished. Most of these roofs known as steep or pitched roofs commonly have asphalt shingles, wood shingles, roof tile, slate. these roofs are started from the bottom and the basic roof system consist of metal edging overlapped by a base sheet or tar paper. In modern code designs the roofs with less than a 4/12 pitch are required to have a double #30 felt paper or a single layer of Ice and Water shield as underlayment.

Flat roofs are mainly found on commercial building, although some residential homes have flat roofs as well. Flat roofs are made up mainly of Hot tar, E.P.D.M., Modified Torch-down, TPO roof systems. Some of the systems combine hot tar and modified together know as mopped-in systems. Some of the cold process systems have been replaced with single-ply systems more such as Double Coverage. Double Coverage was used mainly on homes which the roofs were not quite flat at least a 2/12 pitch recommended. the rows lapped 18" and were adhered together with an emulsion with the upper 18" sheet was nailed to the roof deck in a certain pattern.

Roof Systems regardless of the style of type of roof you may have will consist of the following components known as a roof assemblies. Roof assemblies are what determines the type of roof system and roof covering your structure will have. All structures should have the following rafters, or roof trusses, Insulation, sheathing, metal edging, base sheet, tar paper or Ice & Water shield, Flashings,  pipe jacks, Ventilation, Hip and ridge shingles on pitched roofs and safety line hooks.
